Nova studija rađena u Južnoj Koreji pokazala je vezu između nižeg nivoa mangana u krvi sa visokom koncentracijom žive kao velikim rizikom za nastanak glaukoma. Rezultati istraživanja objavljeni na mreži oftalmologa JAMA ukazuju na do sada nepoznati rizik za nastanak bolesti, koji je vodeći uzrok nepovratnog sljepila širom svijeta.

Profesori na Medicinskom fakultetu San Francisko na Univerzitetu Kalifornija vršili su ispitivanja. Pratili su količine pet teških metala – mangana, žive, olova, kadmijuma i arsena kod više od 2.600 odraslih Korejaca, kao i širenje glaukoma. Rezultati su pokazali nizak nivo mangana i visoku koncentraciju žive kao najvjerovatniju povezanost sa dijagnozom glaukoma. Buduća potencijalna istraživanja biće neophodna da potvrde ova saznanja i istraže ulogu mikroelemenata u patogenezi glaukoma, kao i moguće neurozaštitne efekte, što bi moglo dovesti do novih terapijskih dometa u kontrolisanju glaukoma.
