What to Expect 1 Year After LASIK

Thinking about LASIK and wondering what your vision will be like a year later? It’s natural to want to know the long-term results before making your decision.

Your vision should be clear and stable

For most patients, LASIK results are long-lasting. After your eyes heal, you should have clear vision without glasses or contacts. By the one-year mark:

• Your prescription should be stable.
• Any temporary side effects like dryness or halos are usually gone.
• Most people can do everyday tasks, including driving, reading, and sports, without visual aids.

What about night vision?

Many people report clearer night vision than before LASIK, especially if they had glare or halos caused by glasses or contacts. Some may notice mild halos around lights at night, but these usually improve over time.

Are enhancements ever needed?

A small number of patients may need a touch-up procedure if their vision changes. This can happen if:

• You had a very high prescription before surgery.
• Your vision shifts slightly over time due to natural changes in your eyes.

These adjustments are typically quick and straightforward.

What about aging eyes?

LASIK does not stop the normal aging process. Around age 40–45, many people develop presbyopia, which makes near tasks like reading harder. This is unrelated to LASIK and can be managed with reading glasses or lens-based procedures.

Ongoing eye health

Continue annual eye exams to monitor your overall eye health. LASIK does not protect against other conditions like cataracts or glaucoma, so checkups are important.
