What Are the Different Types of Laser Eye Surgery?
If you’re tired of glasses or contact lenses and looking for a permanent vision correction solution, laser eye surgery might be the answer. But with different procedures available, how do you know which one is best?
At Special Eye Hospital "Dr. Kozomara", we offer two of the most effective laser vision correction procedures: LASIK and PRK. We also provide same-day LASIK, making us the only clinic in Bosnia where you can have your consultation and surgery on the same day!
1. Same-day LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)
LASIK is the most popular laser eye procedure worldwide. At Dr. Kozomara, we take it a step further by offering same-day LASIK, allowing you to complete your consultation and surgery in one visit—saving you time and making the process even more convenient.
How LASIK works:
- A femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap.
- he flap is lifted, and an excimer laser reshapes the cornea to correct vision.
- The flap is repositioned, and healing begins immediately.
Why patients choose same-day LASIK:
- Instant results – Many patients notice clearer vision within hours.
- Fast recovery – Most people return to normal activities the next day.
- Minimally invasive – The corneal flap heals naturally without stitches.
Same-day LASIK is ideal for patients who want quick, effective vision correction with minimal downtime.
2. PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) – A great alternative to LASIK
PRK is the original laser vision correction procedure and remains a great option for certain patients. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not create a flap. Instead, the surface layer of the cornea is gently removed before the laser reshapes the eye.
Why choose PRK?
- Best for thin corneas – No flap means it’s safer for people with thinner corneas.
- Ideal for active lifestyles – PRK reduces the risk of flap complications, making it better for athletes or those in high-contact sports.
- Same visual outcome as LASIK – PRK provides excellent long-term results.
What’s the main difference between LASIK and PRK?
Feature | LASIK | PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) |
Procedure | Creates a flap | Removes the outer corneal layer |
Healing time | 24–48 hours | A few weeks |
Best for | Quick recovery | Thin corneas, active lifestyles |
Risk of dry eye | Moderate | Lower than LASIK |
Which One Should You Choose?
Both LASIK and PRK provide amazing vision correction. The best procedure depends on:
- Your corneal thickness
- Your lifestyle and activities
- Your preference for recovery time
What if you don’t qualify for LASIK or PRK?
Not everyone is a candidate for laser eye surgery. If your corneas are too thin or your prescription is too high, there is another option: Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL).
What Is ICL?
ICL is a permanent lens implant that sits inside the eye, behind the iris (the colored part of your eye). Unlike LASIK or PRK, ICL does not reshape the cornea.
Why Choose ICL?
- Great for high prescriptions – Can correct extreme nearsightedness.
- No dry eye risk – Ideal for people who suffer from chronic dry eyes.
- Bez rizika od sindroma suhog oka – Savršeno za pacijente koji imaju problema sa suhoćom oka.
ICL is an excellent alternative for people who aren’t suitable for LASIK or PRK but still want clear, natural vision without glasses or contacts.
