Najnovija istraživanja pokazuju da bi ljudski mozak zapravo mogao da reguliše napredovanje glaukoma i ostalih neurodegenerativnih bolesti. Naime, glaukom je neurodegenerativna bolest kod koje pacijenti naizgled nasumično gube periferne dijelove svog vidnog polja.
Naučnici su dugo smatrali da je napredovanje glaukoma nezavisno ili nekontrolisano od strane mozga. Međutim, najnovija studija je potvrdila da progresija glaukoma nije slučajna i da mozak ipak igra značajnu ulogu. Istraživanje pokazuje da su pacijenti sa umjerenim do teškim stepenom glaukoma uspijevali da na boljem oku vide dio vidnog polja koje je drugo oko izgubilo, odnosno da dobiju tzv. „efekat slagalice“.
Ovaj obrazac gubitka vida je u potpunom kontrastu sa gubitkom vida kod tumora na mozgu ili moždanog udara, što uzrokuje da oba oka razviju „skotome“ ili slijepe tačke na istom mjestu. Upravo ovaj nalaz je dokaz da mora postojati veza između očiju i da se to može desiti samo u mozgu. Naučnici su takođe utvrdili da „efekat slagalice“ počinje u najranijim fazama glaukoma, kao i koji je dio mozga odgovoran za optimizaciju vida suočen sa njegovim sporim razaranjem od strane glaukoma.
Nadalje, pokazano je i da mozak neće dozvoliti da se izgubi kontrola nad istom funkcijom na obe moždane hemisfere, naravno ako se to može izbjeći. Mozak može takođe aktivno posredovati i u progresiji Alchajmerove i Parkinsonove bolesti koje imaju neurodegenerativna biološka obilježja slična glaukomu. Čini se vjerovatnim da će ista vrsta zaštitnog mehanizma djelovati i na druge neurodegenerativne bolesti.
Istraživači zaključuju da ako mozak kontroliše neurodegeneraciju, tj. ako mozak kontroliše gubitak kontrole, onda bi se sada trebale naći nove mogućnosti da bi se usporilo ili zaustavilo napredovanje ovih bolesti.
