Many eye diseases initially show no warning signs or symptoms, even though some can lead to
permanent vision loss. The importance of regular ophthalmic exams is often overlooked until
changes in vision quality are noticed. When such changes do occur, the disease is frequently
already advanced, and not much can be done to restore vision to its original level.
For this reason, at the Special Eye Hospital “Dr. Kozomara” in Banja Luka, we place great
importance on the general examination, as it determines the course of potential future treatment
recommendation.
What does the general examination include?
• Detailed history taking, including family history
• Vision acuity measurement
• Eye mobility (motility) test
• Eye pressure measurement
• Examination of the anterior and posterior eye segments under pupil dilation
Who is at higher risk for developing eye diseases?
Individuals with a family history of certain eye diseases are at higher risk for developing them.
Many other diseases, however, can first be detected in the eye, such as diabetes, high blood
pressure, as well as certain immunological and neurological diseases. If the general ophthalmic
examination raises suspicion of a certain disease, then a subspecialty examination is
recommended, along with certain diagnostic tests that either confirm or exclude that eye disease.
