GENERAL OPHTHALMOLOGICAL EXAMINATION

Many eye diseases initially show no warning signs, nor are the symptoms clearly expressed, although some of them can lead to permanent vision loss.

The importance of regular ophthalmological examinations is often overlooked until changes in vision quality are noticed. By the time such changes occur, the disease is already in an advanced stage, and there is often little that can be done to restore vision to its original level.

For this reason, great importance is always attached to the general ophthalmological examination, as it determines the further course and treatment recommendations.

What does a general ophthalmological examination include?
  • Taking a detailed medical history, including family history
  • Determining visual acuity
  • Examining pupil reactions
  • Assessing eye mobility (motility)
  • Measuring intraocular pressure
  • Examining the anterior and posterior segments of the eye with dilated pupils

Which individuals are at increased risk of developing eye diseases?

Individuals with a family history of certain eye diseases are at an increased risk of developing them. Many diseases can manifest their initial signs through the eyes, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, as well as certain immune and neurological disorders.

If suspicion of a specific eye disease arises during a general ophthalmological examination, the patient is then recommended for a subspecialist examination, as well as certain diagnostic tests to confirm or rule out that eye disease.
