Jednokratni tretman za daltonizam mogao bi se početi testirati na ljudima već 2017. godine, ako trenutni pokazatelji budu dali dobre rezultate. Naučnici koji rade na ovoj terapiji su već postigli uspjeh u liječenju daltonizma kod majmuna koristeći metode genske terapije.
Nova terapija koju naučnici testiraju podrazumijeva injekciju umrtvljenog virusa, koji ne dovodi do razbolijevanja ljudi, a kojim se prenose geni u konične ćelije mrežnjače. Neki drugi uspješni metodi za liječenje daltonizma uključivali su operaciju, što je komplikovanije i nosi veći rizik.
Za testiranje koje je u toku, injekcija se daje u vitreus – bistru tečnost koja ispunjava središte oka, a virus sa genom na sebi pronalazi tačan dio mrežnjače koji se treba tretirati. Ako se tretman pokaže uspješnim i odobri se za upotrebu, kod nekih pacijenata sa daltonizmom problem bi mogao biti ublažen ili čak riješen samo jednom posjetom oftalmologu. Injekcije drugih lijekova u oko su već postale rutinske u svakodnevnoj oftalmološkoj praksi.
Ipak, eksperti su obazrivo optimistični u vezi ove procedure. Potrebno je još testiranja da bi se saznalo da li je tretiranje samo mrežnjače dovoljno. Naime, za potpuni kolorni vid, mozak mora razumjeti informacije koje mu dolaze od mrežnjača, a mozgovi ljudi koji su rođeni sa daltonizmom su se možda drugačije razvijali sa odrastanjem.
Iako su životi ljudi sa daltonizmom nesumnjivo pogođeni njihovim vidom, daltonizam nije prijetnja po vid. Neki se čak i pitaju da li je uopšte potrebno razvijati tretmane za daltonizam? Međutim, nove metode koje naučnici razvijaju mogle bi u budućnosti biti od pomoći u razvijanju tretmana za druge, ozbiljnije probleme sa mrežnjačom.
