Daltonizam predstavlja poremećaj kod kojeg ne postoji mogućnost razlikovanja dvije ili više boja, najčešće crvene i zelene. Takođe je moguće da nemaju mogućnost raspoznavanja bilo koje boje, iako vrlo rijetko.
Uzroci
Najčešći uzrok daltonizma je problem u razvitku sposobnosti razlikovanja boja u nervnim ćelijama oka, koje se zovu kupaste ćelije i nalaze se u mrežnjači, tankom sloju tkiva smještenom u pozadini oka, na koji je fokusirana svjetlost. Poremećaj najčešće nastaje zbog mutacije na X hromozomu. Zbog te genetske lokacije daltonizam se češće javlja kod muškaraca nego kod žena (muškarci imaju dva X hromozoma i veliku vjerovatnoću da jedan bude nosilac normalnog raspoznavanja boja). U ostale uzroke spadaju nezgode i traume, štetno dejstvo određenih lijekova, kao i oštećenja mrežnjače.
Dijagnostika
Test za raspoznavanje boja, Ishihara test, najčešće se koristi za dijagnostiku daltonizma. Sastoji se od serije fotografija načinjenih od obojenih krugova sa znakovima umjetnutim u njemu, a koji su nešto drugačije boje. Znakovi su uočljivi kod normalnog raspoznavanja boja, ali ne i kod daltonizma. Na slici, broj 74 bi trebao biti vidljiv osobi sa normalnim raspoznavanjem boja. Osobe sa određenim nedostacima mogle bi da vide 21, dok oni sa težim raspoznavanjem, možda ne vide broj uopšte.
Liječenje
Ne postoji način da se izliječi daltonizam, a ljudi koji ga imaju moraju da nauče da se prilagode na nedostatak raspoznavanja boja.
