Mnogi ljudi primjećuju da kako stare imaju više problema sa noćnim vidom, a sve češće se postavljaju i pitanja šta uzrokuje ovaj problem i može li se nešto uraditi povodom toga?
Za razliku od nekih drugih vrsta, ljudsko oko koristi vidljivu svjetlost da bi stvorilo sliku koju oko vidi, što je razlog zašto naš vid noću nikad ne može biti dobar kao vid po danu.
Ali kako starimo, određeni elementi se takođe mijenjaju, što dovodi do toga da ljudi moraju da ulažu veći napor da vide noću kada uđu u petu i šestu deceniju života.
Uobičajen razlog zašto se vid noću pogoršava kako starimo su procesi koji se dešavaju u zjenici i sočivu oka. Da bi se dobro vidjelo, četiri komponente oka moraju dobro da funkcionišu: rožnjača, sočivo, mrežnjača i optički nerv. Ako neka od ovih komponenti ne funkcioniše kako treba, ne može se dobro vidjeti.
Kako ljudi stare, njihove zjenice imaju tendenciju da se više šire, odnosno da se manje skupljaju zbog atrofije mišića dužice. To omogućava više nepravilnosti u vidu, jer ne postoje dovoljno uske zjenice koje bi eliminisale veću zamagljenost. Dakle, šire zenice daju više poteškoća u stvaranju jasnog vida.
Nadalje, starenjem očna sočiva postaju neprozirna i često dovode do razvija katarakte, što takođe utiče na noćni vid. Ako se dođe do tačke u kojoj je neophodna operacija katarakte, to poboljšava vid u cjelini, uključujući mogućnost gledanja noću.
Uvijek je važno na vrijeme uočiti oboljenja ili stanja oka koja mogu da utiču na smanjen noćni vid, te da se ista na vrijeme koriguju.
