Bolest koja je danas najzastupljenija u našoj populaciji može dati ozbiljna oštećenja vida, čak dovesti i do njegovog potpunog gubitka.
Dijabetička retinopatija je najčešći tip dijabetičke očne bolesti i vodeći uzrok gubitka vida kod odraslih osoba. Bolest je prvenstveno uzrokovana promjenama na krvnim sudovima mrežnjače. U početku se možda neće primjetiti nikakve promjene u vidnoj oštrini, ali vremenom se bolest može pogoršati i izazvati sljepilo. Dijabetička retinopatija se javlja u četiri stadijuma:
- Prvi stadijum (blaga neproliferativna retinopatija) – Javljaju se mikroaneurizme – sitna kapilarna proširenja u krvnim sudovima mrežnjače.
- Drugi stadijum (umjerena neproliferativna retinopatija) – Dolazi do začepljenja nekih od krvnih sudova koji hrane mrežnjaču oka.
- Treći stadijum (teška neproliferativna retinopatija) – začepljuje se veći broj krvnih sudova, što mnoge dijelove mrežnjače lišava snabdijevanja Posljedično, ovo stanje daje dovodi do stvaranja patoloških krvnih sudova.
- Četvrti stadijum (proliferativna retinopatija) – Novi krvni sudovi rastu u mrežnjači, krhki su i skloni lakom pucanju. Ako bi ovi krvni sudovi počeli da krvare, ili se čire dalje po oku, mogli bi da dovedu do ozbiljnog oštećenja vida i
Tokom prva tri stadijuma dijabetičke retinopatije osnovni vid liječenja je kontrola nivoa šećera u krvi I eventualno laserska fotokoagulacija ako postoje krvarenja u zoni makule (žute mrlje). Ako je bolest u svom četvtrtom stadijumu, laserski tretman je samo početak liječenja, a često se mora primijeniti i anti-VEGF terapija radi sprečavanja širenja novih krvnih sudova na druge dijelove oka.
