Skoro jedna petina bolničkih slučajeva liječenja katarakte vezana je za ljude u njihovim 40-im i 50-im godinama. Uzrok može biti uticaj sunčeve svjetlosti I UV zraka, trauma i dijabetes. Oko 225.000 novih slučajeva sa kataraktom, kao uzročnikom smanjenog vida, očekuje se svake godine u Velikoj Britaniji.
